On
September 7, 2013 at 3:44pm, AJ Alexander, from MTV & VH1 “Driven,” whom
discovered R&B singer Usher Raymond and new vocalist Sheryl Boyd, took a little time out of his day to
answer a few questions about negotiation and deal making. A quite bit of my
knowledge has come from this man in the entertainment business. AJ Alexander
and I met in 2009 at Café 290 when a couple of my friends and I decided to have
a girls night out and jam to some old school R&B. Besides the great
experiences to be able to record live music for school projects, perform with
his band for a small period of time, perform in between shows, and also watch
his artist grow and mature, and observe his every move, has led me to
motivation of my own career as an entertainer and entrepreneur. Being able to
hold this interview has confirmed my position in this industry in many ways.
The Interview went as followed:
Me- “Hi AJ, this is Alicia and I was wondering if you can take a little time to
participate in an interview with me for my negotiations and deal making class?”
AJ-Sure.
Me-“
How do you separate the people from the problem when you are negotiating?”
AJ-“Just
fight for it because every situation and everyone is different”
Me-“How do you handle positional bargaining tactics?”
AJ- “One
by one switching up through different situations.”
Me-“Can you give me an example of how you worked toward mutual benefit when you
were negotiating a deal?”
AJ- “I
look at your knowledge and always try to stay ahead of the game.”
Me-“
What are your key goals in a successful deal?”
AJ- “Get
what I want, make sure the situation is satisfied, and leave door open to make
advantages.”
Me-“How do you keep all of your clients happy?”
AJ- “You
can’t…just make sure you make profit”
Me-“What would you consider I do to prepare myself for negotiating and making a
deal?”
AJ-“Make
a plan of attack."and strategy.”
Me-“Thank you so much, AJ.”
AJ-“No problem.”
As an entrepreneur and
artist, it is a responsibility of mine to take this into consideration everyday
as I mature in this industry. I have a history with this man and his work and
learned a great deal from him. I enjoy the adventure and continue to keep
moving forward with high expectations. Exceptional growth comes from those you
surround yourself with.
